As part of the Hannenheim Edition, pianist Moritz Ernst, following his CD recording on the eda records label (EDA 38), presents this anthology of all known piano sonatas by Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil. Coming from different creative phases, they show the whole variety of Hannenheim's original, often experimental style. The intellectually sound structure of his music is contrasted with a sombre, unsteadily fluctuating level of expression. The pianistic interpretation of the pieces, which are preferably in two movements, sometimes demands fine dynamic nuances, sometimes a great breath for exuberant counterpoint.
