An air of mystery and a sense of urgency are created through the key (E minor), quick tempo in 4/4 meter, and swirling melodic patterns of this exciting duet. The secondo sets the stage with a four-measure introduction that features a left-hand bass line that rises and falls while the right-hand figures expand and contract. The primo melody borrows some of the melodic material from the secondo, building an air of suspense.
