I wrote the whole of the first complex as a real inferno, using virtually nothing but noises. These end on the lowest note of the violin, which is also the starting point for the profound shock. While the first section is headed “sempre con fuoco e infernale” the headings for the following section are “misterioso e religioso” followed by “con calore” in an attempt to come to terms with these terrible, dreadful events.
