Duo A2 for violin and cello was written for Franz Bartolomey, the principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic. The piece is divided into various phases whose individual characteristics are identified by the composer alphabetically. Each phase manifests two or three characteristic developments that clearly define the structure of the piece, with a central focus on contrapuntally interlocking musical lines. The structure of the two parts often calls for double stops and thus sets the bar very high for both instrumentalists.
