The newly revised edition of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas in the Wiener Urtext Edition is the only one of the more recent Urtext editions on a broad source basis. It includes not only autographs, verified copies and first editions, but also early reprints published during the composer's lifetime and Haslinger's Complete Edition. This is especially important for those sonatas of which neither autographs nor transcriptions are preserved. The edition contains a critical report in German and English, in which the complex source problems of these sonatas are explained in a comprehensible way and the editorial decisions are comprehensibly justified. This makes the band an indispensable tool in the study of these outstanding works of piano literature.
