Inspired by Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, this solo captures the spirit of that piece without the technical difficulties. Written in D minor, the 12/8 meter with the eighth-note ostinato patterns creates the effect of triplets. The melody is treated equally in both hands, beginning first in the right hand and then moving to the left. This provides an opportunity to work on voicing and melodic shaping. Legato pedal helps create the "moonlight" effect.
