メンデルスゾーンは、出版社のニコラウス・シムロックから、『歌曲集（Lieder ohne Worte）』の一部について追加の謝礼を受け取ることになったことを知り、この贈り物に対して心から感謝した。しかし、メンデルスゾーンがこの「言葉のない歌曲集」で後世に贈ったものは、おそらく当時のメンデルスゾーンにも予想できなかったことだろう。これらの独創的なメロディー、ロマンツェンあるいはクラヴィーアシュトッケは、後にリート・オウネ・ヴォーターと呼ばれるようになったが、作曲家の存命中に大成功を収め、19世紀のピアノ文学の中でも最も価値ある作品の一つに数えられるべきものである。私たちの巻は、彼の生前と死後に出版されたLieder ohne Worteの全曲を収録しています。
