Rhode Island: The Ocean State showcases this East Coast state in three appealing movements. "Westerly Mist" is in E-flat major, with a middle section in E major. Copious accidentals, broken extended chords, and chromatic notes generate a misty sound. Specific fingerings in more difficult passages are helpful, and a light syncopation throughout provides energy. In "The Golden Ring," there are imaginatively descriptive tempo markings and a carousel sound. It is cheerful, with abundant accidentals and a faster middle section.
