The formal component of the Duo A3 for violin and viola is characterized by a film-like structural concept—which is why the three individual parts are also referred to as "cuts." Each of these cuts represents an intensification of the overall design by means of gradual acceleration, although the general impression is one of gentle lines and wavelike motion. The piece was written for the violist of the Vienna Philharmonic, Wolf-Dieter Rath.
