原文簡介:
Dame Ethel Smyth was born into a musical family. She went to study at the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of 19 and her ability as a composer was soon recognised. She composed several operas including Der Wald which was performed at Dresden in 1901 and later at Covent Garden and at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. She also wrote songs, a mass in D, an overture to Anthony and Cleopatra, a serenade in D for orchestra, a prelude to The Wreckers, sonatas for both violin and cello, string quartets and organ preludes. She was a leader in the suffragette movement, and composed The March for Women and The Battle Song of the W.S.P.U. In her later years she wrote little music, partly due to increasing deafness, but continued to write excellent prose. Her book of memoirs Impressions that Remained (Longmans 1919) makes fascinating reading. In 1910 she was given an honorary DMus from Durham University and was awarded the DBE in 1922.
