The writing of études for string instruments with an added second solo part is a well-established practice and constitutes a very valuable educational aid. In the second flute part for the études in Book 1 of Ernesto Köhler’s flute method presented in this edition, the composer Werner Richter has created many new playful elements and has not simply provided a mechanical semiquaver accompaniment. Richter’s composition succeeds in clarifying the functional relationships in Köhler’s music and making enjoyable performance possible through some surprising ideas.
