The idea to bridge the circle of fifths and form a new musical harmony by combining the distant keys C major and F sharp major runs through all three movements of this sonata in various ways. Norbert von Hannenheim, a prominent member of the circle of master students of Arnold Schoenberg, creates a music full of deep poetry like grotesque sound images. Despite an occasional virtuoso need for movement with many changes of light, each tone seems indispensable and as if positioned with high accuracy. By fruitfully linking the tonal contrasts, the composer presents a concentrated and expressive work for the duo of viola and piano.
